I have endured many recession periods in America, and in fact, I also conduct a workshop for senior leaders on how to win through a recession. During any recession, you will observe three kinds of leaders who survive: those who want to survive, those who want to thrive, and those who want to win. The difference lies in their thinking and their moves.
A survivor will focus only on cash conservation during the recession, while a thriver will think of different opportunities that can arise during the downturn. But a winner? A winner will go beyond all of these and think of breakthrough ideas that can bring about what I call a discontinuity in the market. Winners aim to change the game rather than just endure or adapt to it.
Before you design your processes to navigate a recession, I encourage you to assess where you and your team fall among these three types of leaders. Are you and your team survivors, thrivers, or winners? This classification will ultimately determine how you navigate the challenges of a recession.
