Suffering is a feeling that almost everyone wants to avoid, whether emotional or physical. You know, my father would often say, no living entity in this world, be it a human or animal, is free from pain. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is your choice. How true. Much of the suffering we experience through our pain is entirely within our heads. It stems from the stories we build up around the pain, which consume us. Much of our suffering lies in our resistance to pain. Just think about it—when your boss insults you or speaks rudely to you, any suffering you feel afterward exists entirely within your mind. It’s your emotional response to the pain that creates suffering, not the pain itself.
We have two choices when we experience pain. One is to pay attention to it and take necessary corrective action. The other is to ignore it—just let it linger and hope it fades away. Our emotional engine often signals us to pull over, investigate the root cause of the pain, make necessary repairs, and change our habits. Yet, many of us prefer to ignore it. Successful leaders, however, do not let emotional pain impact their state of mind. They work to maintain a healthy state of mind, leading from a space of joy. I call this an empowered leader's state of mind. In every person’s life, there comes a time of ultimate challenge, a time when things feel unfair, and your faith and values are tested. These are opportunities to grow into a better person.
Do not let these challenges destroy you or create a flood of emotional pain. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks and failures. In every emotional pain you experience, begin to release, reframe, and regain. The universe works in mysterious ways, often brewing a greater purpose for you that will outlast your pain. But it needs your support. So, regardless of the source of your suffering, I encourage you to use your pain to accomplish something greater in your life.
