Well, I like to think of it like this—a family can plan the most amazing road trip with landmarks and beautiful views. But if their car has no wheels, no fuel, and nothing but conflict between the family members, well, they are going nowhere. And the same is for companies. A company can plan an amazing product, launch a wonderful offsite, or host a great dinner night. But if your employees don’t care for each other and the teams feel disconnected from one another, well, that launch, that offsite, that dinner will likely be a disaster. It won’t lead to anything wonderful.
Leaders have to create an environment in which people see themselves as successful and are inspired to give their best. So when you create this type of environment, your people don’t have to be instructed or told to finish the work—they want to do the work. They already feel inspired and motivated to do more than what is required. In the workplace, leaders are what I call environmental caretakers. And you are responsible for creating a positive work environment. The way you respond to situations, the way you talk to your people, your mood, and your temperament—everything creates that culture. Your people are observing you every single minute.
So here’s what I would tell you to do to create a great work environment: Encourage a spirit of togetherness in your team and start to show them that big picture. Show them that big dream. Soon, you will create an environment where everyone is inspired to work.
